With most Americans having $8000.00 in credit card debt, wouldn't it be nice if they could "erase" their credit card debt? You have probably seen these commercials on late night television featuring the gushing couple bragging about how they erased $10,000.00 in credit card debt with one call.
If you are struggling with high credit card debt and impossible to pay minimum payments, then anything sounds good to you by now. But before you pick up the phone, educate yourself about these claims of erasing your credit card debt.
First, a credit card account is an agreement between you and the lender. You agreed to certain terms for using the credit card and for repaying the amount the credit card company lent you. The lending limits set on your credit card were determined by the credit card company's assessment of your credit file. They believed you could pay back the amount you borrowed to make purchases based upon your credit history.
Because of this agreement between you and the credit card company, there are certain terms you agree to including and most important, to pay your bill on time and with the minimum agreed upon payment.
Credit card debt is not the responsibility of the issuing company, but logically the responsibility of the bearer in this case the consumer.
There is no magic secret to "erase" credit card debt and even bankruptcy does not waive obligations to pay off all credit card liabilities. In fact, new legislation offers greater leeway to the credit card companies than they do to the holder of the debt.
